As the railway system becomes larger and more complex, it also becomes interesting to understand how to plan your yards so that they can be used efficiently without causing disruption to all other traffic. In the video on the right, I show how I have planned some of my yards and how I operate them.

A shadow yard is really train storage tracks, typically hidden on a lower level. In this video (below) I explain what all the tracks in the train layout work and are intended for. How the length of the tracks is linked to the train lengths that the track plan is designed for.
The shadow station is then most easily controlled from a suitable App (software) such as RocRail, Itrain or JMRA. Monitoring is easiest done with a webcam or equivalent.
